Compromising Positions
Mark Kulewicz's endpiece in this month's issue of AAA's Car & Travel accurately depicts what happens when local interests clash with sound and safe design principles. His collection of poignant observations about bad design decisions made on metro area roads reminds us of the price we pay for NIMBYism. Readers familiar with the roads he describes will cringe as his puckish narrative accellerates into each example.

Gatorade plus PEG Solution
"Anohter modification, which is not available commercially, is to add PEG 3350 laxative powder (Miralax, and others) to half a gallon of Gatorade. The PEG 3350 powder dissolves in the liquid. This approach has been used in children. The mixture may be more palatable than the otehr PEG solutions, but there is a cconcern: the sugars in Gatorade, whan a large volume is consumed, can reach the colon and be converted by colonic bacteria to methane or other flammable gases. If electrocautery is used subsequently during colonoscopy, as in removal of a polyp, these gases theoretically could ignite and explode."
